This evening I returned after a few weeks absence coughing my way through January. There were some surprises. The first was how to enter the building as renovations had been taking place, but that was soon resolved and I was a bit tempted to watch the Snooker or was it Pool taking place but entering the hall was a delight, the walls had been freshly painted and there was a sumptuous new carpet underfoot. This was cheering in the way we need at this time of the year when we have had enough of the dark and long for the bright. Also cheering was to see familiar faces of friends and acquaintances and of course the ever cheerful Katy enjoying her new domestic adventures and regaling us with a story of being trapped under a settee. I can still hear her giggles.
It’s interesting that even though it’s a newish batch of songs, it isn’t a problem and you quickly pick up on what you have missed, the only hitch is when we begin in the middle. It is amazing that musicians often can’t read music and manage very well, I thought it was just me trying to keep up.
After warm up it was ‘What a Wonderful World’ which is usually sung with gusto so a good choice to begin with. There were eighteen of us present this evening, four of us Sopranos so the next two songs were a challenge as I hadn’t sung them before and one ( quake quake ! ) was Invisible String by Taylor Swift, also ‘It’s De-Lovely’ a Cole Porter number. After this I was transported back years to my disco days with the mind blowing( at least to me), driving rock number by Jon Bon Jovi - ‘Living On a Prayer’. ‘ I Can’t Help Myself ( Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)’ was another good rousing song. It was brilliant to be back!
